A report published in the journal American Society for Microbiology claimed that the virus did not belong to any know bird flu virus.

“This arouses many unanswered questions,” said Aero Hurt, leading researchers of the Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Influenza of the World Health Organization.

According to Hunt, the discovery suggested that bird flu virus can spread to the South Pole and stay in penguins.

This is the first report of finding active bird flu virus in penguins. Previous research showed that penguins carried antibodies for bird flu in their blood.

The frequency of different types of bird flu virus spreading to the South Pole is yet unknown. It is also unclear if the deadliest bird flu virus can reach the South Pole.
