Rideau Canal

First built in 1826, Rideau is the waterway transportation hinge between Ottawa and Kingston. It is the city’s beloved landmark and Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage site.

The canal has tied its friendship with the Great Wall in China since both serve as symbolic architecture, and both are UNESCO world heritage sites.

A memo of understanding was signed declaring the canal a Chinese-Canadian tourist destination, and will bring the first Chinese travel group to Canada in mid August.

Rideau will be one of their priority choices. Local residents are welcomed to get first-hand knowledge about the oriental country through a photographic exhibition of the Great Wall and a Shanghai World Expo video.
